Balmoral & Treasures of Royal Scotland

Enjoy a historical and cultural tour, as we visit places that are famously associated with the Royal Family and the Kings and Queens of Scotland. Stretching out on the north east coast, Aberdeen is bordered by lush Royal Deeside and the majestic Cairngorms National Park to the west and panoramic sea views to the east and is known as the ‘Granite City’. Whilst Royal Deeside is a picturesque, mountainous part of the north east, and a firm favourite with the Royal Family.

Itinerary

Sunday We depart and travel to Cumbernald. On arrival at the Westerwood Hotel the remainder of the day will be free to explore. This evening enjoy a three course evening meal.

Monday After breakfast we travel into Edinburgh with included entrance to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The Palace of Holyroodhouse, Her Majesty The Queen’s official residence in Scotland, stands at the end of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile. At the Palace, you can explore historic State Apartments, the romantic ruins of the 12th century Holyrood Abbey and remarkable royal gardens. Best known as the home of Mary, Queen of Scots, the Palace was the setting for many dramatic episodes in her short reign. Today, the State Apartments are used regularly by The Queen for State ceremonies and official entertaining. Later this afternoon our scenic journey will continue North to Aberdeen and three nights, dinner, bed & breakfast at the Doubletree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre.

Tuesday Today we venture into Royal Deeside and visit the Balmoral Estate. The castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852. Our guided tour will take in the grounds, gardens, exhibitions and the spectacular ballroom. The Ballroom is the largest room in the Castle and here you can see artefacts belonging to Kings and Queens throughout history. Neighbouring the castle, we head to Royal Lochnagar Distillery and discover how Scotch whisky is made. Our guided tour of the distillery will be followed by a dram.

Wednesday Following breakfast, we enjoy free time in Aberdeen. Known at the ‘Granite City’, Aberdeen is famous for its granite buildings and monuments. To the north of the city centre, the cobbled streets and historic university buildings of Old Aberdeen are steeped in history, while to the east, by the harbour, the quaint fishing quarter is packed with tiny cottages and colourful gardens.

Thursday We depart Aberdeen and begin our return journey and visit Scone Palace. Scone Palace has an exciting and colourful history as one of Scotland’s most important stately homes. Fifteen hundred years ago it was the capital of the Picts. In the intervening centuries, it has been the seat of parliaments and the crowning place of the Kings of Scots, including Macbeth and Robert The Bruce. Later this afternoon our scenic journey will continue to Cumbernauld and one night, dinner, bed & breakfast at the Westerwood Hotel.

Friday We depart after breakfast and travel home via The Royal Yacht Britannia. The Royal Yacht Britannia was home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family for over 40 years, sailing over 1,000,000 miles around the world. Now berthed in Edinburgh, you can follow in the footsteps of Royalty to discover the heart and soul of this most special of Royal residences. We depart later this afternoon to make our journey home.
